Step-by-step itinerary
Visit Armenian Alphabet Monument and Aragats
- See Armenian Alphabet Monument
- Visit Lake Kari on Mount Aragats
- Explore Amberd fortress
The experience
The tour starts with a drive from Yerevan toward Mount Aragats, the four-peaked giant that dominates Armenia's landscape at 4,090 meters. The route climbs to Lake Kari, a glacial lake sitting at 3,250 meters on the mountain's southern slope. From there, the view opens across green valleys on one side and eternal snow and silver lakes on the other, with Mount Ararat visible in the distance across the Ararat Valley.
A second stop takes you to the Armenian Alphabet Monument in the village of Artashavan, built in 2005 to mark the 1,600th anniversary of the Armenian alphabet's creation. The monument is carved from stone into all 39 letters of the Armenian script, which has been in continuous use since 405 or 406 CE. Saint Mesrop Mashtots devised the alphabet to make the Bible accessible to Armenians and spread Christianity. It originally held 36 letters and was completed over centuries. Walking through the monument, you see the alphabet rendered at monumental scale.
The final stop is Amberd fortress on the southern slope of Mount Aragats, founded in the 7th century. The fortress sits on a naturally defended cape and served as a military stronghold for centuries. Next to the fortress stands a church built in 1026 by the duke Vahram Pahlavuni, showing the medieval architecture that shaped the region. The drive back to Yerevan completes the loop.
