The experience
How do you fit five medieval monasteries, a high-altitude lake and a mountain town into one day without a car? This tour strings them together in sequence, starting 60 km north of Yerevan in Tsaghkadzor, the "valley of flowers", where you can ride the ropeway before heading down to Lake Sevan. The lake sits 1,900 meters above sea level, ringed by 3,000-meter peaks, and the tour includes time to rest on its shores before climbing 200 steps to Sevanavank monastery, built in 874 on the peninsula overlooking the turquoise water.
From there you move into Dilijan, surrounded by forests thick enough that locals call it Armenian Switzerland. The town sits inside Dilijn National Park and was historically a health resort. The tour gives you time to walk its streets before heading to Haghartsin monastery, a 10th-century complex set deep in woodlands where a hollow oak tree (nearly as old as the monastery itself) still stands near the entrance. The final stop is Goshavank, founded by a medieval scholar and fabulist, where a khachkar (Armenian cross-stone) carved in 1291 sits in front of the basilica.
You travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with a professional driver, and the tour includes bottled water and pickup from your Yerevan hotel. If you book the guided option, an English or Russian-speaking guide walks you through each site. If you prefer to explore at your own pace, the self-guided version gives you the same route and transport without narration. The ropeway ride at Lake Sevan costs extra and is optional. You can skip it and spend the time by the water instead.

Is this one for you?Book the guided version if you want context for each monastery's history and architecture. Choose self-guided if you prefer to explore the sites at your own rhythm without a running commentary. The fixed route means you see all five monasteries in a single day, but it also means the pace is set. If you want to linger at one site for hours, this tour moves on to the next.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Russian.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What exactly is Tsaghkadzor and why does the tour start there?
Tsaghkadzor, 60 km north of Yerevan on the slope of Teghenis Mountain, is one of Armenia's most popular mountain resorts, surrounded by alpine meadows and forests. The tour begins there to reach the higher elevations before descending to Lake Sevan. You can choose to ride the ropeway or take free time in the town.
Can I actually climb to Sevanavank monastery on the peninsula, or is it just a view from below?
You climb 200 steps to reach Sevanavank monastery itself, built on the peninsula in 874. The monastery sits directly on the water, so the climb brings you to the churches and the full view of the lake from the peninsula, not just a distant vantage point.
Do I need to book the ropeway ride in advance, or can I decide when I arrive?
The ropeway is optional and costs extra (approximately 3,000 AMD per person). You can decide on the day whether to ride it. The tour includes time at Lake Sevan either way, so you're not locked into it.
What's the difference between booking with a guide and without?
The guided option includes a professional English or Russian-speaking guide who explains each monastery and site. The self-guided version gives you the same transport, route and stops without narration, so you explore at your own pace.
Is lunch included, and where do you eat during the 10-11 hours?
Lunch is not included in the tour price. The itinerary allows rest time at Lake Sevan and time in Dilijan where you can find restaurants and cafes, but you arrange and pay for your own meal.
