The Experience

The first thing I noticed as we left Yerevan was how quickly the city sounds faded behind us. Our driver, Aram, didn’t say much at first—just pointed out the mountains in the distance and asked if we wanted Armenian music or silence. I went for music. The road up to Tsaghkadzor felt like it kept changing: one minute you’re passing little roadside fruit stalls (the apricots smelled so sweet), then suddenly pine trees everywhere. We pulled into Tsaghkadzor and I could see why people call it the Valley of Flowers—even in late spring, there were patches of wildflowers poking through the grass near the ropeway station.

I wasn’t sure about the ropeway—I’m not great with heights—but our guide Anna said it was worth it for the view. She was right. Up there, you get this sweep of green hills and snowy peaks, and it’s weirdly quiet except for the wind. I tried to take a photo but honestly, my hands were shaking a bit (don’t laugh). Back on solid ground, we wandered over to Kecharis Monastery. It’s older than it looks—Anna explained some of the stones are almost 900 years old. There was this smell of damp stone inside, mixed with candle wax. A local woman came in while we were there and just stood quietly by one of the altars; I didn’t want to intrude.

The drive from Tsaghkadzor to Lake Sevan is maybe 40 minutes? Hard to keep track because the landscape keeps shifting—one moment forest, next these open views where you can see clouds reflected in water far below. When we finally reached Lake Sevan, that first look at all that blue is something else. The air felt colder here—almost sharp—and there were gulls circling above us. We climbed up to Sevanavank Monastery on the peninsula (my legs still remember those steps) and Anna told us about Princess Mariam who built it centuries ago. You can see so far across the lake from up there that everything feels kind of small and big at once.

I still think about that last moment before heading back—just standing above Lake Sevan as the light changed, not really talking much. Someone nearby was grilling fish (maybe trout?) and you could smell it drifting over in the breeze. We piled back into Aram’s car with muddy shoes and cold hands but didn’t mind at all.
