The Experience

The tour starts in Areni village, where Hin Areni Winery sits in a region that has shaped Armenian winemaking for millennia. You'll taste wines made from indigenous Armenian grape varieties and tour the factory, which combines historic winemaking traditions with modern equipment built to process over 250 tonnes of grapes. From there the route heads toward Tatev Monastery, a medieval complex that once served as both a religious center and a strategic fortress for the Syunik kingdom, built on naturally defended terrain with secret passages that once connected it to the canyon below.

The Wings of Tatev ropeway is the centerpiece: a 5.7-kilometer cable car that takes about eleven minutes to cross a deep gorge of the River Vorotan, supported by three towers and carrying thirty passengers at a time in cabins that travel in opposite directions. The ropeway lands near the monastery complex itself, so you step out directly into the site instead of approaching it by road. The monastery's architecture and position on the landscape are what made it an impregnable fortress in its era, and the ropeway gives you the view of that geography from the air.

The final stop is Khndzoresk cave city, eight kilometers from Goris, built into two mountainous slopes where flat ground never existed and people carved dwellings into the stone instead. A recently built swinging bridge, 160 meters long and suspended 63 meters above the gorge floor, connects the two banks of the old village. The bridge is wide enough for 700 people at once and opens a view across the canyon. The village also holds the graves of Armenian commander Mkhitar Sparapet and members of the Syunik nobility. Transport is air-conditioned, water and pastries are provided, and the guide translates between English and Russian throughout the day.
