Tierra del Fuego National Park shore excursion: End of Route 3
Five to seven hours tracking 300-year-old forests to the end of the Pan-American Highway
A guided shore excursion through Tierra del Fuego National Park departing from Ushuaia harbour, this tour follows trails through lenga and guindo forests to Lake Roca–Errazuriz, stops at the Alakush Visitor Center to learn about the Yámanas and early settlers, and ends at Bahía Lapataia and the southernmost post office on Route N°3. The guide is a local specialist; pickup and transport are included, and the timing is built around your ship's arrival and departure so you stay on schedule.
Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Tierra del Fuego National Park
- Depart from hotel to Route N°3
- Follow trails to Lake Roca – Errazuriz
- Visit Alakush Visitor Center
- Continue to Bahía Lapataia
- Stop at Ensenada Zaratiegui post office
- Optional: Ride End of the World Steam train
The Experience
The tour starts when your ship arrives in Ushuaia, with pickup from inside the harbour. You travel by air-conditioned vehicle along Route N°3 toward the park's interior, passing through lenga and guindo forests that frame the landscape. The guide explains the ecology and human history as you go—the Yámanas who lived here for centuries, the first European settlers, and the trees themselves, some over 300 years old.
At Lake Roca–Errazuriz, you walk a small trail where the water reflects the surrounding forest and the view stretches toward the Chilean border. The Alakush Visitor Center comes next, where the guide unpacks the park's fauna, flora, and the layers of settlement that shaped this corner of Patagonia. Then you continue to Bahía Lapataia, where the forest meets rocky formations and the sea—this is the official end of Route N°3, the Pan-American Highway. A stop at Ensenada Zaratiegui lets you visit the southernmost post office in Argentina and take the photograph that marks the endpoint.
The whole day is timed so you're back at the harbour before your ship departs. You can upgrade to include a ride on the End of the World Steam Train if you want to add that to the route. Infants and small children can come along; specialized infant seats are available.
