The Experience

We jumped into the van right outside our hotel in Buenos Aires—still yawning, honestly—and met Lucía, our guide. She asked if we’d had mate yet (we hadn’t), so she promised to show us her favorite spot later. First stop was Plaza de Mayo. It’s noisy there, with pigeons everywhere and people crossing in all directions. Lucía pointed out the Casa Rosada and told us why it’s pink (I won’t spoil it). I remember the sound of protest drums echoing from somewhere nearby—she said that happens almost daily. The history here feels alive, not like a museum at all.

After that we drove down to San Telmo. The cobblestones are rough under your shoes and there’s this faint smell of coffee and old wood from the antique shops. We took a photo with Mafalda—the little cartoon girl on her bench—and Lucía laughed when I tried to pronounce “empanada” properly (I’m still not sure I got it right). Caminito was next, all those painted houses stacked together like someone spilled a box of crayons. There was tango music playing live on the street; I didn’t expect how much it would get under my skin. It’s touristy but somehow still feels real—maybe because locals actually hang out there too?

I think my favorite part was Recoleta. The cemetery is strange and beautiful at the same time—huge statues and marble everywhere, cats sunning themselves between tombs. We wandered through quiet tree-lined streets after, past old cafes where people seemed to know each other by name. Lucía showed us El Ateneo bookstore inside an old theater; I still think about that ceiling with its faded frescoes and how you can just sit there with a book like you’re in some secret club.

Somehow we squeezed in Floralis Generica—the giant metal flower that opens and closes—and ended near Puerto Madero where everything felt suddenly modern and shiny compared to the rest of the day. The whole Buenos Aires city private tour felt like jumping between different worlds every half hour or so. By the end I was tired but kind of wired too…like maybe I finally understood why Porteños talk so fast.
