The Experience

We’d already left the city behind when our driver pointed out the first wide sweep of Pampas grass — honestly, it’s just endless out there. By the time we rolled into San Antonio de Areco, I could smell wood smoke from somewhere nearby and hear someone strumming a guitar in the plaza. Our guide, Martín, waved us over to this old bar with slanted walls (he called it El Boliche de Bessonart), and you could feel how many stories those creaky floorboards had soaked up. He told us how the town started around 1730 — I tried to imagine that, with all these old tiles under my feet.

We wandered past silversmiths’ workshops where you can actually watch people hammering out these intricate pieces — Draghi’s place was my favorite. There’s something about the way sunlight catches on silver dust in the air that makes you stop for a second. Martín introduced us to an older woman making alfajores at La Olla de Cobre; she handed me one warm from the tray and grinned when I got powdered sugar everywhere. I didn’t expect to care so much about chocolate at 10am but here we are.

The Ricardo Güiraldes Gaucho Museum was next — lots of saddles and mate cups and faded photos of gauchos who looked both tough and kind of lonely. After that, we headed out to an estancia just outside town (about fifteen minutes away), bumping along a dirt road while Martín told us about his grandfather’s horses. The air smelled like grass and barbecue smoke by then. We tried horseback riding for a bit (I was not graceful), then sat down under these giant trees for asado lunch — beef so tender you barely needed teeth, plus wine that made everything slower in a good way.

I still think about the moment after lunch when the gauchos did their horse tricks — everyone fell quiet except for birds overhead and some kid laughing nearby. It felt like time stretched out sideways for a while there. On the drive back to Buenos Aires I realized my jeans smelled like campfire and I didn’t mind at all.
