The Experience

You get picked up from your Tirana hotel in the morning and head straight toward the coast. The drive takes about an hour, and your guide talks through the landscape as it changes — what you're seeing, why it matters, how people live here. Once you hit Durrës, the walking part begins. You climb down to one of the city's restored towers, the kind of structure that used to guard the harbor, and from up there the whole coast opens out in front of you — 360 degrees of sea and city at once. Then comes the Durrës Amphitheater, the third-largest Roman amphitheater in the world after Rome and Capua. Only a section of it has been excavated, but standing in what's left, you get the scale of it — the stone, the engineering, the fact that people sat here two thousand years ago watching something we can't quite imagine anymore. After that, you have an hour free at the Vollga Promenade to walk, sit with coffee, or grab a souvenir. Then the tour moves to Golem Beach, which is the longest sandy beach in Albania, and you get 2.5 hours there — enough time to swim, eat lunch at one of the beach restaurants, or just lie down and stop thinking about anything. The beach is liveliest from May through September; outside those months, some places close or quiet down, which is worth knowing if you're traveling in winter. You head back to Tirana in the late afternoon with the day behind you.
