The Experience

You start from your Tirana hotel in an air-conditioned car with a private guide. The drive takes you south to Berat, where the first stop is the castle itself—the Kala fortress, a 13th-century stronghold built on the hilltop. The Museum of Iconography occupies the largest church on the castle grounds, the Church of the Dormition of St. Mary, and holds religious paintings from Albanian monasteries—the collection is named after Onufri, a 16th-century Albanian fresco and icon painter. Coming back down the hill, you enter the National Ethnographic Museum, housed in a restored 18th-century Ottoman mansion. The ground floor recreates a medieval bazaar with embroidery, woodcarving and metalworking displays; the second floor shows a traditional house layout with a guest room, kitchen and work room. Both museums are included in the tour.

In the afternoon, you walk through Mangalem and Gorica, the two neighborhoods that give Berat its nickname: the city of a thousand windows. Hundreds of small white Ottoman-style houses are built into the hillside so steeply that from below they appear stacked on top of each other. The streets are narrow and cobblestone, lined with traditional houses now converted into restaurants, shops and hotels. You have free time here to explore on your own, buy souvenirs, sit on a terrace, photograph the bridge and the houses, and try local food. The tour ends in the late afternoon, and your guide drives you back to your Tirana hotel.
