The Experience
The day starts with pickup from your Tirana hotel at 9:00 am. The drive to Berat covers around two and a half to three hours, giving you time to settle in with your guide before you arrive at the castle. Once there, you climb to Berat Castle itself—a fortress that has stood since the 4th century BC and remains one of the few inhabited castles in the world. From the hilltop, the entire valley spreads below you, and your guide walks you through the stone pathways while explaining how the city was invaded three times by the Ottomans, Romans, and Bulgarians before the Muzaka family made it a powerful principality in the 14th century.
After the castle, the tour moves to the Onufri Iconography Museum, housed inside an 18th-century Cathedral of the Assumption of Saint Mary that has been carefully restored. Then you descend into the heart of the old city—Mangalem and Gorica, the two neighborhoods that define Berat. The elegant Gorica Bridge crosses the Osum River between them, and both quarters are famous for their white Ottoman houses built so densely on the hillside that they seem to stack on top of one another. This is the view that gave Berat its name: The City of a Thousand Windows. Your guide leads you through the narrow streets and explains the history layered into the architecture.
