The Experience
Eight hours is enough to move through Kruje's main stops without rushing. The day starts with hotel pickup in Tirana and the drive to the Castle of Kruje, a 15th-century hilltop fortress where Skanderbeg held off the Ottoman Turks for 25 years. The castle sits high enough to see across the surrounding landscape and back toward Tirana, and the Skanderbeg Museum is built into it—a chronological walk through the warrior's life and military campaigns that unified the Albanian tribes and tribes against the Ottoman empire.
After the castle, you move through the Ethnographic Museum, a 19th-century house built by the Toptani family that shows how a traditional Albanian household worked: the family produced its own food, honey, leather, weapons and olive oil, and the house still has a small hammam and watermill. The walls carry fresco paintings. Then comes the Old Bazaar Market, a 400-year-old Ottoman-style marketplace restored in 2015, where you can buy traditional Albanian clothing, copper pots, silver jewelry, rugs and embroidered tablecloths, or sit at one of the cafés along the stalls.
The afternoon ends with a hike up Mount Sarisalltik. The mountain cave sits at 1,176 meters and is a pilgrimage site for Albanians—inside are a fountain of holy water, the first Albanian mosque and the grave of Sarisalltik, a religious leader. The views from the cave stretch across the surrounding landscape, and a café at the top lets you rest and take in the sight. An air-conditioned vehicle carries you between stops, and your guide speaks English or Dutch throughout.
