The Experience

The drive west from Tirana to Durres takes you to Albania's second-largest city, built on the site of ancient Dyrrachium. Once a strategic port on the Adriatic, it became an important Roman settlement, and the ruins still stand in the old town. You'll walk through the remains of the forum and Roman baths, see the Byzantine walls and Venetian tower that mark later centuries of occupation, and visit the archaeological museum, which displays artifacts and urban plans showing how the city was laid out in its prime. The city center and town hall round out the Durres portion of the tour.

After Durres, you head back to Tirana for the second half of the day. The capital tour takes in Skanderbeg Statue in the main square, the Et'hem Bey Mosque and Clock Tower, and the Italian-era buildings that house government institutions. You'll also see the ex-communist structures painted in bright colors that mark Tirana's expansion in recent decades. A driver-guide leads both parts of the tour and handles the transport in an air-conditioned vehicle, so the day holds together without you arranging pickups or navigation.
