The Experience

From the ground, Victoria Falls is loud and wet and enormous. From a helicopter 500 feet up, it's something else entirely. The mist rises like smoke, the gorges cut sharp lines through the landscape, and you can actually see the scale of it—the water doesn't just fall, it disappears into a system of seven gorges the Zambezi carved over millions of years. The flight takes off 10 to 15 minutes outside Victoria Falls town, so there's no long drive, just a safety briefing at the helipad and then you're up.

The pilot circles the falls twice in a zigzag pattern so you get both sides, and they talk you through it the whole time on headphones—pointing out where the mist forms the rainbow, where the water hits hardest, which direction the spray goes. They're English-speaking and answer questions as you fly. After the falls, the helicopter heads into Zambezi National Park, where the landscape flattens and opens up. The park splits into two sections: the Chamabonda vlei side where giraffes and antelopes move across grassland, and the riverine side where hippos, crocodiles and buffalo stay close to water. You won't see every animal on every flight—that depends on the day—but the pilot knows where to look and will point them out if they're there.

Livingstone Island sits right before the gorge, and you'll pass over it on the way back. That's where Devil's Pool is—the famous spot where swimmers stand centimeters from a 1km drop into the falls. You won't swim it on this flight, but seeing it from above, knowing what it actually is, changes how you think about the people brave or reckless enough to do it. The whole flight runs maybe an hour or so, and you land back where you started. The company offers video footage of the flight if you want to buy it on the way out.
