The experience
Your day starts before dawn. A 4x4 picks you up from your lodge or hotel in Livingstone and drives 15–20 minutes into Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, where you'll have light breakfast (tea, coffee and homemade muffins), while your professional guide briefs you on what to expect and the safety rules for walking in the bush. You'll carry a bottle of mineral water and walk at whatever pace suits your group, stopping as often as you want to watch animals or ask your guide about what you're seeing.
The walk itself lasts around 3 hours, though much of that time is spent quietly observing. You're moving through open bush where white rhinos, among Africa's most endangered animals, live alongside elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, warthogs, baboons and antelopes. An armed escort ranger walks with you the whole time. The guide sets the rhythm and chooses where to go based on animal movement and your group's interests. There's no fixed route, so each walk is different.
After the walk, the vehicle picks you up and takes you to a picnic spot on the bank of the Zambezi River, where you'll have freshly made muffins, tea, coffee, soft drinks and more water. Then you're driven back to your hotel. Minimum age is 12 years old. Wear walking shoes, a hat and bush-friendly clothes: long sleeves and trousers protect against sun and brush.

Is this one for you?Small groups walk together at a pace you control, which suits first-time safari walkers and anyone who wants to stop and watch without rushing between stops. The early start and leisurely rhythm mean you see more wildlife and avoid the midday heat, making this better for families with children aged 12 and up than a faster-paced game drive.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What animals will I actually see on the rhino walking safari?
White rhinos are the main draw, but Mosi-oa-Tunya is also home to elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, warthogs, baboons, monkeys and various antelope species. What you see depends on where the animals are on the day you walk. Your guide reads the bush and takes the group toward active wildlife.
How early do I need to wake up for this safari?
Pickup happens as early as possible to avoid the heat that builds through the day. You'll be collected from your lodge or hotel before dawn, driven to the park, and start walking while it's still cool: the best time to spot wildlife and walk comfortably.
Can I set my own walking pace, or does the group move together?
You set the pace as a group and can stop as often as you want. The walk is leisurely, designed for observation and conversation with your guide rather than distance or speed. You can ask questions and linger at any moment that interests you.
What's included in the breakfast and picnic?
Light breakfast before the walk includes tea, coffee and homemade muffins. After the walk, at the Zambezi River picnic spot, you get freshly made muffins, tea, coffee, soft drinks and mineral water. Water is also provided during the walk itself.
Is this safari suitable if I've never done a walking safari before?
Yes. The pace is leisurely, the guide explains everything, and an armed ranger accompanies the group for safety. The experience is designed for observation and learning rather than fitness or experience level. Minimum age is 12 years. It's not recommended for pregnant travelers or those with spinal injuries.
