The Experience

It’s strange how quiet everything gets when you step out of the 4x4 in Mosi-oa-Tunya. The engine clicks as it cools, and then it’s just us, the two rangers—one in front, one behind—and this hush that settles over the grass. I kept glancing at my shoes, half-worried about making too much noise, half-wondering if I’d really see a rhino up close or just a distant gray lump. Our guide, Joseph, whispered stories about the park—how they track the white rhinos each morning. He had this way of pausing mid-sentence to listen for birds or something moving in the bush. I tried to copy him but mostly just heard my own heartbeat.

The walk itself isn’t long—maybe twenty minutes? But every step felt like an event.
