The experience

The safari splits between driving and walking: you travel part of the way in an open game drive vehicle, then step out to move through the bush at your own pace. The walking portion is where you track white rhinos, zebras and wildebeest, staying alert for animal tracks your guide points out and explains. This is not a passive ride-through. You're moving through the landscape itself, reading the ground and the trees as you go.

Halfway through, you stop at a picnic area by the Zambezi River to rest and refuel with soft drinks and light snacks. The bush medicine component runs throughout: your guide stops at different trees, plants and shrubs to talk through their healing uses, then demonstrates practical applications. How to clean your teeth using natural materials, for instance, or other skills people have relied on in the bush. These are not lectures. They're hands-on moments that show how the landscape provides.

Wear closed hiking shoes, not sandals, and bring long sleeves and trousers in dark or khaki tones to blend into the environment. The whole outing takes three and a half hours. A minimum of two people is required per booking, and the guide conducts the walk at the group's pace rather than on a fixed schedule.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What animals might I see on the walking safari in Livingstone?

White rhinos are the centerpiece, but the walk also passes zebras, wildebeest and other wildlife. Your guide points out tracks and signs along the way, teaching you how to read the ground for evidence of animals that may have passed through.

How much of the safari is walking versus driving?

You drive part of the route in an open game drive vehicle, then walk for up to three hours through the bush at your group's own pace. The balance lets you cover more ground while spending substantial time on foot tracking animals.

What is the bush medicine part of the tour?

Your guide stops at various trees, plants and shrubs to explain their medicinal uses and demonstrate practical applications: such as natural methods for cleaning teeth or other survival skills people have used in the African bush for generations.

What should I wear and bring?

Closed hiking shoes or trainers are essential. Open sandals are not suitable. Long sleeves and trousers in dark, khaki or green tones help you blend into the environment. Bottled water and soft drinks are provided throughout, and a light snack is served at the Zambezi River picnic stop.

Is this safari suitable for someone with limited hiking experience?

A moderate level of physical fitness is needed, and the minimum age is 12 years old. The walk moves at your group's pace rather than a forced speed, but you should be comfortable walking for several hours in the heat. It is not recommended for pregnant travelers or those with poor cardiovascular health.
