  • Tour St Fagans National Museum of History
  • See Caerphilly Castle and explore town

The experience

Barry Island opens the day with a coffee stop and a stroll along the colourful promenade, where you can walk the beach or sit with views across the water. From there, Nash Point takes over the morning: the cliffs here are part of the Wales Coast Path, and the walk offers views of the Bristol Channel with an iconic 19th-century lighthouse standing on the headland. Birdwatchers find nesting seabirds in the cliff faces. The site is dramatic enough that it has been used as a filming location, though the real draw is the walking and the views themselves.

Ogmore Castle comes next: a smaller stop, but the ruins sit beside a river with stepping stones you can cross when the water is low, and the setting is what makes it memorable rather than the scale of what remains. The stone keep, curtain wall and gatehouse are all there, but the picturesque location is the thing. St Fagans National Museum of History is Wales' most visited heritage attraction and one of Europe's leading open-air museums: over 40 buildings have been re-erected on the site, including farmhouses, a school, a chapel and workshops, so you walk through a working snapshot of Welsh life across centuries rather than viewing objects behind glass.

Caerphilly Castle closes the day: Wales' largest castle and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, second only to Windsor in size across all of Great Britain. Entry is optional, so you can either walk inside or spend the time exploring the town's independent shops, cafés and souvenir stores. Your guide speaks English or Italian and can answer questions throughout the route. Children from age 5 are welcome.
