The experience
The tour opens at Cardiff Castle, the city's oldest building and most prominent landmark, where your guide walks you through 2,000 years of history from the Romans through the Bute family before setting out into the city itself. From there you move into Bute Park, one of the greenest spaces in Britain, which sits directly next to the castle and holds a river, stone circle, old monastery and dense woodland. The route then takes you through Cathays Park, Cardiff's civic centre and the finest of its kind in the UK, where you'll see war memorials, City Hall and other notable buildings that anchor the neighbourhood.
The middle section moves through the city's central market, one of Cardiff's most popular landmarks, before reaching the Principality Stadium: the modern counterpart to the castle and one of the world's most famous rugby arenas, set unusually in the city centre. You'll also walk through the Victorian and Edwardian shopping arcades, which Cardiff holds in higher concentration than any other UK city, and explore Butetown, the diverse neighbourhood that grew rapidly in the nineteenth century as Cardiff became an industrial powerhouse. The Coal & Shipping Exchange, once the epicentre of global coal trading, stands as one of the city's most noteworthy buildings.
The final stretch takes you to Cardiff Bay, the revitalised waterfront that was once the world's biggest coal exporting port. You'll see the Norwegian Church Arts Centre, one of the oldest surviving structures in the bay area and a link to Wales' connections with Norway; Roald Dahl Plaza, named after the author who was born in Cardiff; the Wales Millennium Centre, the modern iconic structure of the bay; the Senedd (Welsh Parliament), which opened in 2006; and the Pierhead, a distinctive red-brick building with a tall clock tower. The guide discusses how the bay has transformed over two centuries and what the future holds for the waterfront.
