The experience

The day starts with a pass by Cardiff Castle (over 2,000 years of Roman foundations and medieval architecture stacked in the city center) before heading south into the countryside toward Caerphilly Castle. Wales' largest fortress sits ringed by lakes with a famous leaning tower, and you'll have time to walk its grounds and take in the scale of the place. From there the route pushes deeper into Mid Wales, climbing toward the Brecon Beacons.

The centerpiece is a steam train ride on the Brecon Mountain Railway, where you board a working locomotive and travel through open moorland and classic Welsh countryside as the line winds through the foothills of Bannau Brycheiniog National Park. The train moves slowly enough to see the sweep of mountains and the shape of the land. After the ride, you stop at Talybont Reservoir (a still body of water cupped by rolling hills), for photos before arriving in Brecon itself, a market town on the River Usk where you get free time to eat lunch, walk the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, or visit Brecon Cathedral.

Before returning to Cardiff, the tour stops at the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park Visitor Centre, where panoramic views open across the surrounding mountains and you can learn about the area's geology, wildlife and history. A live guide travels with the group throughout the day and narrates the stops and the landscape. The whole tour runs eight hours from start to finish.
