The day starts in Cardiff and moves through a sequence that mixes coast, ruins and heritage sites without backtracking. Barry Island comes first. A seaside town where you can walk the beach or sit on the coloured promenade with views across the water. Nash Point follows, a stretch of the Wales Coast Path where cliffs rise above the Bristol Channel and a 19th-century lighthouse stands as a marker for the perilous coastline below. The site is also a haven for birdwatchers watching seabirds nest in the rock face.

Ogmore Castle sits next to a river with stepping stones that let you cross when the water runs low: the ruins show a stone keep, curtain wall and gatehouse, all framed by the water and the valley around it. St Fagans National Museum of History is one of Europe's largest open-air museums, with over forty re-erected buildings including farmhouses, a school, a chapel and workshops that show how Welsh people lived across different periods. The castle at the centre sits in landscaped gardens with formal Italian sections, fishponds and a rose garden, and you can walk through the interiors decorated to match different eras of its history.

Caerphilly Castle, the final stop, is the largest castle in Wales and second only to Windsor Castle in all of Great Britain. Entry is optional: some visitors buy admission to walk the grounds, while others spend the time in the town itself, which has cafes, shops and places to sit. The driver then takes you back to Cardiff and the meeting point, ending the day without you having to coordinate transport between any of the five sites.
