The experience

The day starts at Cardiff Castle, a Roman fort turned Norman stronghold that became a Victorian fantasy when the Marquis of Bute and William Burgess rebuilt it in the 19th century. Your guide walks you through the castle's layers (the Roman foundations still visible, the medieval military architecture, the Second World War shelters carved into the walls), and explains how Cardiff itself got its name from the old Roman fort on the river Taff. From there, you move into the city proper: the covered arcades and Victorian market that locals still use, St John The Baptist Church with its pre-Raphaelite stained glass, and Cathays Park, the early 20th-century civic centre built with Portland Stone and coal wealth.

Caerphilly Castle comes next: the largest castle in Wales, surrounded by a lake and famous for its leaning tower, which tilts at a steeper angle than Pisa's. The castle was restored over 174 years by the Marquis of Bute, preserving its medieval military character in a way that sets it apart from the fantasy castles elsewhere on the tour. After Caerphilly, you stop for lunch at a restaurant serving traditional Welsh food: Lamb Cawl, Shepherds Pie, Welsh Rarebit. Then comes Castell Coch, the Red Castle, a Neo-Gothic summer retreat designed by William Burgess that looks like it stepped out of a fairytale and has been used in films and TV shows for exactly that reason. The interiors are ornate, and from its rooms you can see across Cardiff.

The National Museum Cardiff fits into the afternoon: one of the best collections of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art in the UK, with Monet, Cézanne, Renoir's Blue Lady, and Rodin's The Kiss spread across 15 galleries. Your guide gives you a curated taster rather than a full survey. The tour also passes through Llandaff, the area where Roald Dahl grew up, and points out the Cathedral School he attended and the sweet shop on High Street said to have inspired Matilda and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. A stop near the Principality Stadium (formerly the Millennium Stadium, home to Welsh rugby) rounds out the day. Note that the National Museum is closed Mondays. If your tour falls on a Monday, your guide will substitute other locations to compensate.

Top questions

What's inside Caerphilly Castle that makes it different from the other two?

Caerphilly is the largest castle in Wales and retains much of its medieval military architecture, unlike Cardiff and Castell Coch, which were heavily restored in a Victorian fantasy style. The castle is surrounded by a lake and features a leaning tower that tilts more steeply than the Tower of Pisa.

Will I have time to actually explore the National Museum Cardiff, or is it just a quick look?

The National Museum is included, and your guide gives you a curated introduction to the highlights (the Impressionist masterpieces and Welsh art) rather than a rushed walk-through. You'll get up close to the most famous works, though a full day in the museum would be needed to see everything. The museum is closed Mondays. If your tour is booked for Monday, your guide will add other locations instead.

Does the tour include lunch, and what kind of food is served?

Lunch is a stop at a traditional Welsh restaurant serving dishes like Lamb Cawl (a hearty soup), Shepherds Pie, and Welsh Rarebit. You'll order and pay for your meal separately, but the restaurant is chosen specifically for serving authentic Welsh food.

How much walking is involved in this tour?

The tour includes a walking section through Cardiff's city centre to see the market, arcades, and historic churches, plus walking around the castles themselves. You should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness. The tour runs nine hours total, though you'll also spend time in the vehicle between locations.

Will I see the places where Roald Dahl's stories came from?

Yes. The tour passes through Llandaff, where Dahl grew up, and your guide points out the Cathedral School he attended and Mrs Pratchett's sweet shop on High Street, which is said to have inspired scenes in Matilda and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
