That first afternoon, if you choose the hotel option, you trek 2.5 kilometers down to Cat Cat Village to see the waterfall and a French colonial power plant from 1925, then watch a short performance by village kids before heading back to town for dinner. If you pick the homestay route instead, you're already committed to a longer day: a 12-kilometer descent into Muong Hoa Valley, through Y Linh Ho and Lao Chai, ending in Ta Van where you cook dinner with your host family and try the local rice wine.

Day two is where the trek actually happens. From the hotel, you walk 12 kilometers down into the valley—the part people come for, really—moving through terraced rice paddies where H'Mong farmers are working. It's 3.5 hours of downhill, lunch at a restaurant around 12:30, then another push to Ta Van to see how the Dzay people live. The homestay version wakes you at 6:30 to watch the family's morning routine, feeds you breakfast with them, then sends you into Hoang Lien Son National Park for a 6-to-8-kilometer trek to Giang Ta Chai Village, where there's a jungle waterfall and a rattan bridge you can actually cross. Both routes get you back to Sapa by mid-afternoon, then a bus ride back to Hanoi that arrives around 9:30 p.m., dropping you at Ly Thai To Street (about half a kilometer to two kilometers from most Old Quarter hotels).
