Why leave Hanoi for two days to sleep on a bus and in a mountain bungalow? Because the trek to Sapa and the villages beyond it is the part of northern Vietnam most travelers miss.

You board a sleeper bus in Hanoi at 10pm, wake in Sapa at dawn, and spend two days trekking through rice terraces and bamboo forest to Black Hmong and Dzay villages. You sleep one night in a bungalow with a local family, cook dinner with them if you want, and trek another 3 kilometers the next morning before heading back to Hanoi by 9pm. Everything—bus, bungalow, meals, water—is included; you just show up at your hotel Monday through Thursday night ready to leave.

The Experience

There's something about boarding a sleeper bus at 10pm from Hanoi's Old Quarter that shifts your whole sense of what a trip can be. You're not flying out—you're rolling north through the night, and by the time you wake up at 5:30am, you're already in Sapa, the mountain town that sits at the edge of the hill tribe territories. The bus ride itself is part of the experience; it's a luxury sleeper with decent seats, and the six-hour journey means you arrive rested enough to actually trek. After breakfast and a quick hotel stop to drop your main luggage, you're walking by 8:30am.

The first day's trek covers about 12 kilometers over four hours, and it's not a casual stroll. You start at Y Linh Ho and move through rice terraces that drop away on both sides, following the Muong Hoa Stream down toward Lao Chai, a Black Hmong village tucked into the valley. The Hoang Lien Son Mountain rises behind everything, and the scale of it—the way the landscape just keeps opening up—is what makes people quiet on the trail. By late afternoon you reach Ta Van Village, where the Dzay people live, and that's where you stay the night in a bungalow with a proper toilet, not a pit stop. Dinner is cooked by the family who runs the place, and if you want, you can join them in the kitchen and learn how they make it. There's a local bar nearby if you want to meet other trekkers; otherwise you're just sitting on the porch watching the mountains go dark.

Day two starts early—breakfast at 8am, then another trek beginning at 8:45, this time through bamboo forest and rice paddies toward Giang Ta Chai, where the red Dzao people live. This stretch is shorter, about 3 kilometers over 3.5 hours, and it's mostly downhill. You get a real photo stop here, the kind where you're standing in the middle of a panorama and the village is below you. By 11am you're back on the main road, the bus picks you up, and you have a couple of hours to shower and rest in Sapa town before heading back to Hanoi. The return bus leaves at 3pm and gets you back to your hotel by 9pm, with two rest stops along the way.

The whole thing—bus, bungalow, meals, water on the bus—is included. You're not arranging transport between Hanoi and Sapa, not booking a village stay separately, not figuring out which trek to take. Pickup is only from Old Quarter hotels, and only Monday through Thursday nights, so plan your Hanoi days around that window. The trek itself is rated suitable for all fitness levels, though the distance and the mountain terrain mean you should be comfortable walking for hours at a time.

What’s included

Your trip includes round-trip luxury sleeper bus transport from Hanoi to Sapa, one night in a bungalow with a self-contained toilet in Ta Van Village, dinner and breakfast cooked by the local family, lunch on day one, welcome drink at the bungalow, and 2 bottles of water per person on each bus journey. Hotel pickup from Old Quarter hotels is included; you arrange your own return to your hotel from the drop-off point.
