The Experience

We’d barely shaken off the bus sleep when the misty air of Sapa hit me — it’s colder than Hanoi, almost sharp, and I could smell wood smoke somewhere. Our guide, Minh, was waiting at the hotel with hot tea and a grin that made me feel like I’d known him longer than five minutes. The breakfast buffet was simple but warm (I still think about those little fried eggs), and after stuffing my big bag away, we set off for Fansipan. The Muong Hoa train rattled along with this old-school clatter — kind of comforting — before we switched to the cable car. I didn’t realize how high up we were until clouds started drifting below us and someone’s kid gasped at the Buddha statue looming out of nowhere. Minh told us it’s the tallest in Vietnam; he sounded proud.

The climb to Fansipan Peak is only 600 steps but my legs felt every one — maybe don’t skip breakfast here. At the top, there was this weird hush except for wind and a few people quietly taking photos. It’s not always clear up there but we lucked out: rice terraces folding into valleys, all that green just rolling on forever. I tried to say “Fansipan” in Vietnamese; Minh laughed gently and corrected me (I probably butchered it). Back in Sapa town for lunch — sticky rice and pork, nothing fancy but so good after that climb.

Trekking down to Y Linh Ho later was muddy but kind of fun if you don’t mind getting your shoes wrecked. We passed Black H’mong women with indigo-stained hands waving hello; one handed me a tiny woven bracelet for luck (I still have it). The villages aren’t quiet — roosters crowing, kids chasing each other by the riverbank. By Ta Van village our group was tired but happy to drop bags at the homestay. The cooking class that evening turned into more laughter than instruction; my spring rolls kept falling apart but nobody cared much. Dinner was loud and lively, everyone passing dishes around under bare lightbulbs while outside you could hear crickets starting up.

Next morning after breakfast (rice porridge this time), we trekked again through bamboo forests toward Giang Ta Chai village where Red Dao women wore bright red headscarves knotted just so. Minh explained their customs as we walked — something about herbal baths for new mothers? I didn’t catch it all but it stuck with me anyway. Lunch at a local spot before heading back to Sapa town felt like hitting pause on real life for a bit. The bus ride back to Hanoi felt longer somehow; maybe because I wasn’t ready for city noise again.
