The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the way the city glowed — not just from neon signs but from headlights bouncing off wet pavement. Our Jeep rumbled up outside the Reunification Palace, all chrome edges and open air. I could smell fried garlic drifting in from somewhere nearby. Locals zipped past on scooters, balancing entire families or crates of flowers. Our guide, Minh, waved us into the back seat and grinned like he knew what kind of night we were in for.

We cruised past the Saigon Opera House — so much grander than I’d expected, honestly — with its white columns lit up against the dark. Minh told us about French architects and old performances while we sipped cold beers straight from the Jeep’s little cooler (never had a beer taste quite like that). At one point he pointed out a couple arguing softly near Notre Dame Cathedral; “That’s real Saigon romance,” he joked. The cathedral itself looked almost unreal under the city lights, those twin towers stretching up higher than you’d think from photos.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much at dinner. Minh took us to this tiny spot where nobody spoke English except him — he ordered for us, something sizzling with lemongrass and chili that made my eyes water in a good way. There was this moment when I tried to say “thank you” in Vietnamese and totally butchered it; Minh laughed so hard he nearly dropped his chopsticks. Afterward we stopped by Ho Thi Ky flower market — even late at night there were bursts of color everywhere, and the air smelled sweet and damp.

The tour ended on a rooftop bar with a view over Ho Chi Minh City that still pops into my head sometimes when I hear traffic at home. It wasn’t quiet up there — you could hear music floating up from some street party below — but it felt peaceful anyway. We clinked glasses (one last drink included), watched the city keep moving beneath us, and just sat for a while before heading back down.
