The Experience

The moment I hopped on the back of the motorbike in Ho Chi Minh City, I could smell something frying nearby—maybe garlic? Our guide, Linh, laughed when I fumbled with the helmet strap (I never get it right the first time). We zipped out into the night, weaving between scooters and neon-lit stalls. It was loud—honking, laughter, music from somewhere—but somehow not stressful. First stop: a tiny spot for chicken noodle soup that Linh said was “famous before Instagram.” The broth was so clear and fragrant, I almost forgot to take a photo. Almost.

I’d heard about this Michelin food tour in Saigon but didn’t expect to be so full after just two stops. The bò lá lốt—grilled beef wrapped in betel leaves—was smoky and a little sweet, eaten with fingers and a mess of herbs. Linh showed us how to wrap everything up properly; I tried to copy her but mine looked like a sad spring roll. She just grinned and shrugged. At Bánh xèo 46A, the pancake was thin and crispy at the edges, stuffed with shrimp and pork. The dipping sauce had that fishy tang you either love or…well, learn to love.

Somewhere near Ba Son Bridge, we paused for skyline photos—everyone else did too, even locals on their way home. The city lights reflected off the river; it was humid but there was this breeze that felt almost cool for a minute. Last dish was bò kho, beef stew with bread to dip in. The spices hit differently than I expected—lemongrass mostly—and I could taste why it made the Michelin list. By then my shirt smelled like smoke and fried shallots and honestly I didn’t mind.

I still think about that ride home through District 1—full belly, helmet hair, trying to remember all the food names Linh taught us (pretty sure I butchered half of them). There’s something about seeing Saigon from behind someone who knows every shortcut and snack cart; you feel less like a tourist for a few hours. If you’re hungry for real street food—and don’t mind getting a little lost in the noise—I’d say go for it.

What’s included

Your evening includes pickup and drop-off at your hotel (if you’re staying in District 1, 3 or 4), all transportation by motorbike with an English-speaking local guide who also drives you safely between stops, helmets for safety (and style), rain ponchos if needed—and all four Michelin-recognized street food dishes along the way before returning you home full and happy.
