The experience
The trek starts at 8am from your hotel and begins with a 6km walk into Don village and the Thai ethnic minority settlements of Uoi and Lan, descending into a valley of rice terraces that opens up views of the villages from above. The path winds through vegetation on small trails, and this first stretch is graded easy. From there, the route continues 8km through less-traveled terrain toward Hieu Village, following a stream down to Hieu Waterfall (the only waterfall in Pu Luong Nature Reserve), where you stop for a break. This middle section is moderate in difficulty. Lunch happens at a local family's home near the waterfall, then a short walk takes you to Long Village to finish the route. Those choosing the bike option follow nearly the same itinerary on easier roads.
What sets this reserve apart are the bamboo water wheels dotting the riverside: centuries-old devices still in active use, feeding rice fields and households with a design so simple it has not needed to change. You see them throughout the day as you move through the villages and valleys. The guide speaks English and knows the local culture of the Thai ethnic groups living here, so you learn how the communities use the land and the waterways as you walk. The whole day wraps by 4pm with a 30-minute drive back to your hotel.
