The experience
The day starts at 8 am with pickup from your hotel in Pu Luong, then a three-hour trek into the reserve's core. The trail winds through rice field terraces toward villages inhabited by the Black Thai minority, where you can watch daily life unfold without the crowds that hit more accessible areas. Kho Muong Cave (the largest unspoiled cave in the reserve) sits along the route. Its chambers open up without heavy development, so the rock formations and the scale of the space stay intact.
Lunch comes at midday to refuel before the afternoon leg. You'll walk through Eo Ken village, which has no vehicle access and sits on the edge of Pu Luong National Park, then move on to Don village, one of the first tourism-focused settlements in the reserve but still ringed by rice fields. Around 3 pm, you'll spot the giant water wheels: bamboo and wood structures that harness stream flow for irrigation, a working piece of the region's traditional agriculture that most visitors photograph but few understand in use.
The trek ends with a swim at Hieu waterfall before heading back to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay in a private room. The whole day runs about eight hours from pickup to return.
