The experience

The day starts at 6:30 AM with pickup at Hanoi Opera House or your hotel in the Old Quarter, then a 4-hour drive north to Pu Luong Nature Reserve with a 15-minute rest stop near Cuc Phuong National Park. By 11:00 AM you meet your local guide at the reserve's starting point and cross a suspension bridge to reach one of Pu Luong's most scenic villages, where the largest stream cuts through. The walk follows the river as it winds past rice fields and village life, and you search for the giant water wheels: a remarkable invention the Taidam ethnic minority built to channel water uphill for irrigation.

Around midday you reach Don Village for a set-menu lunch of seven dishes with a view across the reserve (drinks are at your own expense). After eating, a scenic drive takes you past Pu Luong's iconic rice terraces, an ideal spot for photos. You then come across Uoi hamlet, which sits at the base of towering mountains and offers the kind of landscape that fills a phone's memory card. The route continues to Lan Village, known as the "Kingdom of Thai People in Pu Luong" and home to around 100 Thai families. Here you have the option to ride a bicycle around the village, watching locals at their daily tasks and observing their traditional brocade weaving up close.

Around 4:00 PM the guide joins you for part of the journey back to Hanoi, a chance to say goodbye after a full day together. A second 15-minute rest stop is included on the return drive, and you arrive in Hanoi between 8:00 and 8:30 PM. The tour includes an English-speaking local guide, private A/C car from Hanoi, bicycle use, a set-menu lunch, travel insurance and all fees and taxes.
