Speedboat & Snorkeling in Phu Quoc: Two Reefs in One Morning

You get picked up from your hotel, taken by speedboat to two snorkeling sites with a local guide, given all gear and snacks, and returned by early afternoon. The Experience

The van picks you up at your hotel between 9 and 9:30am, air-conditioned and unhurried. By 10 o'clock you're at An Thoi harbor stepping onto a small speedboat with your guide — someone who knows these waters and speaks English well enough to point out what you're seeing underwater. The boat heads out calm and fast, and within fifteen minutes you're dropping anchor at Kim Quy Island, also called Golden Turtle Island. Thirty minutes in the water here, mask on, and you're moving through coral gardens with small reef fish darting past in colors that don't look real until you see them. The water is clear and cool, not cold.

Back on the boat for the ride to Gam Ghi Island — another thirty minutes of snorkeling, this time in shallower water where the fish are bigger and more curious. By 11:30 you're done with the reef work, and the boat slows down. This is the part that catches people off guard: you're floating on the ocean with the engine off, the guide hands around cold beers and local wine in plastic cups, someone puts on chill music, and people jump in just to swim and float and talk. It's not rushed. Around 12:30, if you want, there's an optional stop at May Rut Island for a proper swim and bathroom break. Then the ride back takes thirty minutes, and you're back at your hotel by 1:15 or 1:30pm.

The snorkeling gear is included — mask, fins, snorkel — and so are the snacks: chips, biscuits, local fruits, bottled water. If you're traveling with a group of two to four people, you can book a private boat instead of joining a shared one; private tours start at $250 for two guests and go up $25 per person after four. The best time to go is December through June, when the water is clearest and the weather is stable.
