The experience
Eight hours gives you two very different stops in one port day. My Son Sanctuary sits in a mountain basin where the sacred Thu Bon river begins. The location itself was chosen for defense and spiritual power. The tower temples built here over ten centuries were dedicated to Hindu gods, chiefly Shiva, when the Champa Kingdom ruled this coast and drew its religion from the Indian subcontinent. You walk among the ruins with your guide, who explains the architecture and the culture that built it. The site is steep and involves climbing, but the paths are walkable for most fitness levels.
From My Son, the drive to Hoi An takes you through the river valley the temples once commanded. Hoi An itself is a working port town frozen in the 17th and 18th centuries: the wooden buildings and street plan are original, not reconstructed. You'll see the Japanese bridge (built 400 years ago), the Chinese assembly hall, and walk the night market that runs along the Hoai river. The timing is planned so you see the town when the lanterns turn on at dusk, which is when Hoi An looks the way it has for centuries. Lunch at a local restaurant is included.
Your guide is a private professional who speaks English or French. The vehicle is air-conditioned, and the route is designed to get you back to Tien Sa or Chan May port on time for the ship. Bottled water is provided throughout the day.

Is this one for you?Eight hours is enough to see both sites without rushing, but it rules out a second port excursion the same day: the drive between My Son and Hoi An alone takes time, and the temple complex and ancient town each deserve an hour or more to walk through properly.

What exactly is My Son Sanctuary and why was it built there?
My Son Sanctuary is a complex of tower temples built between the 4th and 13th centuries by the Champa Kingdom as a religious capital. The site sits in a mountain basin where the sacred Thu Bon river originates, which gave it both spiritual significance and natural defense: the mountains surround it like a ring. The temples were dedicated to Hindu gods, especially Shiva, reflecting the kingdom's spiritual roots in the Indian subcontinent.
How much walking is involved at My Son and Hoi An?
My Son involves climbing among the temple ruins on steep paths, so comfortable shoes and a moderate fitness level help, though the site is suitable for all fitness levels and the pace is set by your guide. Hoi An is a walking tour through the ancient town's wooden streets and along the river market. It's flat and leisurely, designed so you can see the lanterns come on as evening falls.
Is lunch included, and what about drinks during the day?
Lunch at a local restaurant in Hoi An is included. Bottled water is provided throughout the eight-hour tour. Any other meals or drinks are on your own.
Will I make it back to the ship on time?
Yes, the eight-hour itinerary is timed to return you to Tien Sa or Chan May port before the ship departs. Your guide coordinates the schedule to ensure you're back with time to spare.
