The experience
You're picked up at the port entrance at a time you arrange in advance, then driven inland through countryside to My Son. The site itself spreads across a valley ringed by jungle, and your licensed guide walks you through the temple clusters, explaining how the Cham people built these structures, some dating to the 4th century, using stone fitted without mortar, and what each tower's bas-relief carvings reveal about the Champa Kingdom. You get about two hours to move at your own pace with the guide, taking photos and asking questions about the architecture and history.
After lunch at a local restaurant, you head to Marble Mountains, a cluster of five limestone and marble hills named after the five elements: Metal, Water, Wood, Fire and Earth. You explore natural caves (some of which sheltered a hospital during the war), and visit a holy pagoda at the summit. The guide shows you a family marble-carving workshop in the village below, where you can watch craftspeople at work. From the top, you see the city and ocean spread out below.
The final stop is Dragon Bridge, Da Nang's modern steel landmark shaped like a dragon, a symbol of power and good fortune in local tradition. You photograph it from the ground, then head back to the port, arriving with an hour to spare before your ship leaves. The tour includes bottled water, a safe vehicle with driver, all entrance fees, and lunch.
