The experience
The tour leaves Chan May Port and heads inland to My Son Sanctuary, the most important religious center of the ancient Champa Kingdom between the 4th and 13th centuries. The ninety-minute drive gets you there by mid-morning. With your licensed English-speaking guide, you'll spend ninety minutes exploring temple ruins built and rebuilt over nearly a thousand years: Hindu tower-temples decorated with detailed bas-relief carvings, constructed without mortar using techniques the Cham people developed over centuries. Your guide explains the spiritual role of My Son in Champa culture and points out how the jungle valley surrounding the sanctuary shaped the site's history.
After lunch, an authentic Vietnamese set menu, the route turns to Marble Mountains, five limestone hills named after the five elements: Metal, Water, Wood, Fire and Earth. You'll explore natural caves, some of which sheltered people during the Vietnam War, visit a Buddhist pagoda, and climb to viewpoints overlooking Da Nang and the South China Sea. The guide walks you through the history and cultural meaning of each mountain as you move through them.
On the return to Chan May, you stop at My Khe Beach (historically known as China Beach, where a US military base operated) for a swim in the South China Sea and a beer. The driver ensures you're back at the port at least an hour before your ship's departure time. The tour includes bottled water, towels, entrance tickets to both sites, and elevator access at Marble Mountains.
