The Experience

I’ll admit, I signed up for this Mekong Delta day trip mostly out of curiosity — I’d heard about the floating markets in Cái Bè but didn’t really know what to expect. By the time we left Ho Chi Minh City behind (the city noise fading into green fields), I was already feeling lighter. Our guide, Mai, had this gentle way of pointing things out — like how you can smell sweet rice in the air when you get close to the river. She laughed when I tried to say “xin chào” to our driver; my accent must’ve been hopeless.

The boat ride felt almost unreal at first — wooden boats gliding past us loaded with pineapples and jackfruit, and people waving from their decks like we were long-lost cousins. There was this moment when we stopped by a cottage industry spot and sampled coconut candy straight off the line. Sticky fingers, warm sugar smell everywhere. Someone dared me to try snake wine (I did — just a sip, it burned all the way down). The Mekong Delta is busy but somehow peaceful too; kids on the banks shouted hello as we drifted by.

Lunch was at a local home on Tân Phong Island. The host showed us how to make bánh xèo — Vietnamese crispy pancakes — and I definitely broke mine flipping it, but nobody cared. We ate together at a big table under a fan that made everything feel slow and lazy for a while. After that, some people napped but I grabbed a bike and pedaled around the village lanes. It’s quiet except for roosters crowing and someone playing music somewhere far off. The sunlight through palm leaves looked almost gold.

I still think about that view from the sampan — water hyacinths drifting by, sun on my face, Mai humming something soft in Vietnamese. Leaving felt strange, like I’d borrowed someone else’s afternoon and wasn’t quite ready to give it back yet.

What’s included

Your day includes hotel pickup and drop-off within central districts of Ho Chi Minh City, all motorboat and hand-rowed boat trips through Cái Bè’s waterways, snacks like fresh fruit and honey tea along the way, a five-course traditional lunch with cooking demonstration at a local home (vegetarian available), an optional bicycle ride around village lanes after lunch, plus guidance from an English-speaking Vietnamese guide before returning comfortably by minivan in the evening.
