The Experience

Green fields flickered past the bus window as we left Ho Chi Minh City behind—rice paddies, water buffalo, then suddenly the Vinh Trang Pagoda’s mosaic dragons glinting in the morning haze. Our guide, Hien, kept pointing out small things I’d never have noticed: a vendor balancing baskets of mangos on her bike, kids waving from a roadside ditch. By the time we reached My Tho and stepped onto that first boat, I could already smell the river—muddy-sweet, with something floral underneath. The motorboat was loud but somehow soothing; Hien had to shout over it to explain why some houses floated and others didn’t. I just nodded and watched the banks slip by, coconut trees tangled overhead.

We stopped at a coconut island in Ben Tre for this hands-on candy workshop—my fingers stuck together after rolling one piece (I’m definitely not cut out for candy-making). At Truc Lam Phuong Nam Zen Monastery later that morning, everything slowed down—the air smelled faintly of incense and old wood, monks moved quietly along shaded corridors.
