The Experience

I didn’t expect the water to be that green — not just “pretty” green but almost glassy, like someone dropped a bucket of jade into Lan Ha Bay. We’d left Hanoi early (pickup was a blur; I barely remembered coffee), and by noon we were stepping onto the boat at Cat Ba Island, shoes squeaking against the deck. Our guide, Minh, handed out chilled towels and grinned at my sunburned nose. He said something about “lucky color” in Vietnamese — I still don’t know if he meant my face or the bay.

Lunch came quick: steamed fish that tasted like it had been swimming that morning, plus these little fried things I couldn’t name. The boat drifted past limestone towers and tiny floating houses — kids waving from blue boats. When we got to Ba Trai Dao Beach for kayaking, I nearly tipped over trying to get in (Minh pretended not to notice). Paddling was quieter than I thought it’d be. Just the slap of water on the hull and sometimes a bird overhead. Later some of us jumped off the top deck — the water was colder than it looked but felt good after sweating in the sun.

I’m not much of a cook but somehow ended up rolling spring rolls with sticky fingers next to Li from Singapore — she laughed when I tried to say “nem cuốn.” The night on board was louder than expected: karaoke happened (badly), someone caught a squid (not me), and there were more stars than I’ve seen in years. My room had its own shower and AC, which honestly felt pretty fancy after all that saltwater.

Next morning started early — sunrise over Lan Ha Bay is supposed to be famous but clouds had other plans. Still, biking through Viet Hai Village with mist clinging to banana leaves was kind of perfect anyway. There were old men playing cards under a tree, chickens everywhere, and this earthy smell after rain that stuck to my shoes. By lunch we were back on the boat for one last meal before heading back toward Hanoi. I keep thinking about that silent patch of water right before breakfast, just me leaning on the rail while everyone else slept.
