The difference is the absence of crowds. Halong gets the cruise ships. Lan Ha, managed as part of Cat Ba National Park, stays quieter. You'll spend two days on the water with a smaller group, kayaking between islets, swimming off Ba Trái Đào Beach where the sand is soft and the water stays clear, and sleeping overnight in a cabin on the boat itself.
Day one moves between stops. After boarding near Cat Ba Island (the largest of the 367 islands that make up the archipelago), you'll paddle a kayak into narrow channels between the limestone walls, then anchor for a swim.
