The experience

The pickup arrives at your hotel in Dong Hoi and drives you an hour to Phong Nha Cave. You get a 30-minute briefing on safety and cave rules, then practice paddling at the entrance before entering the darkness. Two people share each kayak. You paddle the first 3 kilometers through the river passage with a flashlight mounted on your helmet, moving through the stalactite systems the cave is known for.

At the 3-kilometer mark you leave the kayak and hike the remaining 1.5 km on foot to reach a secret underground lake. You swim here in the dark water, then soak in a mud bath before heading to Bi Ki Cave for lunch. After eating, you have an hour to walk through two dry chambers on your own (Tien Cave and Cung Dinh Cave), where you can see old letters carved into the ceiling by the Cham people.

The guide drops you at a convenient point for this exploration, then drives you back to your hotel. The whole day runs eight hours from pickup to return. Minimum group size is two people, and the tour operates in all weather. Bring clothes you don't mind getting wet and muddy.
