The experience

The day starts with pickup at your hotel and a drive northwest into Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park's core zone. Paradise Cave sits about 75 kilometers from Dong Hoi, roughly an hour and twenty minutes by road. You walk through the cave (billed as the longest dry cave in Asia), and spend the morning exploring its passages before heading to lunch at Dark Cave restaurant around midday.

Dark Cave is where the physical part begins. After kayaking across the river to reach the entrance, you walk into the cave wearing a headlamp, moving through passages lit only by your own light. The real activity happens deeper inside: a mud bath where you wade into the mineral-rich mud, then a swim in a freshwater lake that sits within the cave itself. You rinse off in the lake water before the return kayak across the river. The whole sequence (paddling, walking in darkness, mud, water) takes up the afternoon before the drive back to your hotel around 5:30 p.m.

Bring swimwear and be ready to get wet and dirty. The tour includes an air-conditioned vehicle, a guide, bottled water, and lunch. The mud bath and swimming are optional activities you choose to do, not things done to you. The kayaking is the only way in and out of Dark Cave, so it is not optional if you want to reach the mud bath at all.
