The Experience

We rolled out of Hanoi’s Old Quarter in these old army jeeps, the kind that rattle just enough to make you feel like you’re really going somewhere. The city faded so fast behind us it felt almost unreal, and suddenly we were crossing the Red River. Boats drifted under us; someone was singing nearby but I couldn’t see who. Linh translated as they talked about how each tree has its own “character.” There was tea, earthy and warm, and I kept thinking how quiet it felt compared to Hanoi’s usual chaos. I tried saying thank you in Vietnamese—everyone laughed except the grandma, who just nodded like she approved.

The wet market after that was loud again—vendors calling out over piles of dragonfruit and something that looked like hairy potatoes (rambutan?). I tried sugarcane juice for the first time; it was cold and sticky-sweet, perfect for the heat. We bumped along dirt roads past rice paddies until we reached Co Loa Citadel. Linh told us stories about King An Duong Vuong defending this place centuries ago—I didn’t expect to actually feel history but standing inside those old walls with the wind blowing through was… well, different than reading it in a book.

Last bit: Hoi Phu village where people still make broomsticks by hand.
