The experience
Eight to twelve hours gives you time to climb through Marble Mountains and explore Hoi An's historic district without rushing. You start at your cruise port (either Tien Sa or Chan May), where a private vehicle and guide meet you. The route takes you through Da Nang's modern landmarks: the Dragon Bridge, which crosses the Han River and breathes fire and water on weekend nights, and the Han River Bridge, a symbol of the city's rapid development. You'll also pass My Khe Beach, a 20-mile white sand stretch named by American troops during the Vietnam War.
At Marble Mountains, you enter a spiritual site that has drawn pilgrims for centuries. The five hills (named after the elements metal, wood, water, fire and earth) contain caves, tunnels, and Buddhist temples carved into the stone. A circular cave leads to the summit, where you get panoramic views of the coast and the city below. The caves themselves hold historical traces: bullet holes from troops who once used them to watch My Khe Beach during the war, and small buildings and shrines tucked into the grottoes.
The second half moves to Hoi An Ancient Town, a 15th-to-19th-century trading port that remains exceptionally well preserved. Your guide leads a walking tour through the old merchant houses, the Hoi An Museum, and the Japanese Covered Bridge: the iconic structure that defines the town's skyline. You'll see how indigenous and foreign influences shaped the street plan and architecture. A traditional Vietnamese lunch is included, and you have time to explore the narrow alleyways and local shops before returning to your port.
