The experience
How do you fit two of Vietnam's most visited regions into a single day without spending hours on the road? This tour leaves your hotel in Districts 1, 3 or 4 in the morning and heads straight to Cu Chi, where you crawl through the tunnels themselves: the same underground network that sheltered fighters during the war. The tunnels are narrow and low. You'll see the traps, bunkers and hidden entrances that made them so effective. If you want to, you can try shooting at a range on the site, and there's a cassava tasting afterward to ground you back in the present.
By midday you're in My Tho, boarding a motorboat for a trip along the Mekong River. The boat stops at local islands where you eat fresh tropical fruits and listen to traditional Vietnamese folk music. Then you switch to a rowing boat and drift through the narrow canals of Ben Tre, known as the coconut kingdom. You'll visit a coconut candy workshop and see how the village works. The Truc Lam Phuong Nam Zen Monastery sits at the quieter end of the day, a chance to step out of the boats and into the countryside before the drive back to the city.
The whole thing runs about eleven hours from pickup to drop-off. You travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with your guide, who speaks English and handles the logistics at each stop. Lunch is included, as are the motorboat and rowing boat rides, fresh fruit, honey tea and coconut juice. The only things you'll pay extra for are tips for the guide and driver, and anything beyond what's listed.
