The Experience

I thought I knew what to expect from Ba Na Hills — but then we stepped out of the cable car and everything changed. The air was crisp, almost chilly even though it was June, and clouds drifted low around us like something out of a movie. Our guide, Minh, grinned as he handed me a selfie stick (yep, included — I laughed but ended up using it way more than I’d admit). He pointed out the Golden Bridge first thing; those giant stone hands holding up the walkway looked even stranger in real life, especially with mist curling around them. There were tourists everywhere but somehow it felt peaceful up there, just a little unreal.

The train ride to the flower garden was short but kind of fun — you pass these bursts of color that don’t seem to belong on a mountain. Minh told us about some rare orchids (I forgot their names immediately), and an older lady from Hanoi showed me how to pose for photos among the hydrangeas. She insisted on taking one for me with my phone. The smell in the garden was sweet but earthy too, not just flowers but damp leaves and something almost herbal. I didn’t expect to feel so relaxed wandering around there.

Lunch was at one of those big buffet places in the French Village — honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect at 1,400 meters above sea level. But it turned out better than most hotel buffets I’ve had; lots of Vietnamese dishes alongside random French pastries (I tried three). The French Village itself is kind of surreal: cobblestones, fake churches, people posing everywhere. Minh joked that if you squint you might believe you’re in Europe until someone walks by eating pho.

We finished up at Fantasy Park — loud music echoing off the walls and kids running everywhere. I didn’t play any games but watched a couple try VR racing and nearly fall over laughing. By 3:30pm we were back in the van heading down toward Da Nang again. My legs were tired in that good way and I kept scrolling through all those photos Minh took for us — some silly ones too. It’s funny how much you can fit into one day trip from Da Nang or Hoi An; I still think about that view from the bridge when clouds rolled past my feet.
