The Experience

The cable car climbs before you've finished your coffee. Ba Na Hills rises 40 kilometers northwest of Da Nang city center, and the journey up takes you past the tree line into a different climate altogether — the air cools as the city shrinks below. The cable car itself is the highest in Southeast Asia by vertical distance, which means the ride lasts long enough to watch the landscape shift from tropical to something closer to the highlands of Sapa or Da Lat. Your guide meets you at the base, and from there the day follows the mountain itself: cable car up, then the Golden Bridge, then down through the gardens and into Fantasy Park.

The Golden Bridge is the thing everyone photographs, and it's stranger in person than online. A 150-meter span of yellow-gold curves through the forest, supported by two enormous stone hands that rise from the mountainside like they're pushing the bridge up from below. The hands are weathered gray, moss-covered in places, which gives the whole structure this odd mix of grand and ancient — less like a modern attraction and more like something that's been here longer than it actually has. You walk across it slowly, partly because the views down into the valley demand it, partly because the design makes you. After the bridge, the path leads to Linh Ung pagoda, where a 27-meter Buddha statue overlooks the coast. It's one of three statues believed to protect Da Nang from natural disasters, and locals still leave offerings.

After eating, you have time to move through the Flower Garden at your own pace, which is the part most people skip in their heads but end up lingering in. Then Fantasy Park, which has over 100 games and rides spread across the hilltop. The cable car back down leaves whenever you're ready within the day's window, and the air cools again as you descend.
