The Experience
Registan Square opens the day—three grand madrasahs facing each other across the heart of ancient Samarkand, where royal proclamations and trade once filled the plaza. The guide walks you through the tilework and architectural detail that made this the centerpiece of the city for centuries. From there, the tour moves to Gur-Emir Mausoleum, the 15th-century tomb of Amir Timur (Tamerlane) and his descendants, including Ulugh Beg, the astronomer-ruler whose observatory still stands in the city.
Bibi-Khanym Mosque comes next—one of the largest mosques ever built in Central Asia when it was commissioned after Timur's campaign in India. The scale of it is meant to show power, and standing in front of it, you see why. Siab Bazaar sits right beside it, the oldest market in Samarkand, and the guide can point you through it if time allows. The final major stop is Shah-i-Zinda Necropolis, a complex of more than twenty mausoleums built between the 11th and 15th centuries, each one decorated with tilework and architectural styles that vary across the centuries. This site is unique in Central Asia for the concentration of decorated tombs in one place.
Transportation is included throughout, and the guide speaks English, Russian, or Turkish depending on which option you select at checkout. Bottled water comes with you, and admission to the sites is covered. The six-hour pace means you move between stops without rushing, though lunch is on your own. If you prefer to walk instead of riding, the walking-tour option is available at checkout.
