The Experience

You start from your hotel, picked up in an air-conditioned vehicle with a guide who speaks English and knows Samarkand's history. The route moves through the city's Silk Road landmarks in sequence: the Statue of Amir Timur first, then Gur-e-Emir Mausoleum, where Timur's tomb sits under an ornate dome built in 1404. The guide explains the Timurid architecture as you stand in front of it—the tile work, the scale, why this empire mattered to Central Asia.

Registan Square comes next, the centerpiece of old Samarkand. Three madrasahs (Islamic schools) surround the plaza: Ulugh Beg's from the 15th century with its tile work still intact; Sher-Dor from the early 17th century with tigers and geometric patterns in the decoration; Tilla-Kori, the last built, finished in the mid-17th century with gold leaf covering the interior. You walk the square itself, which was once a marketplace—the name means "sandy place" in Persian—and the guide fills in what each building was for and who commissioned it.

Shah-i-Zinda Necropolis is a burial complex dating back to the 11th century, a series of decorated mausoleums and tombs built into a hillside. The name translates to "Living King," and the site draws visitors for its tile work and the way the tombs are arranged. Bibi-Khanym Mosque, commissioned by Timur in the late 14th century and named after his wife, stands separately—another example of the scale Timurid rulers built at. The tour also includes Siyob Bazaar, where you see local life in action: fresh produce, spices, textiles and traditional crafts. Ulugh Beg Observatory, built between 1424 and 1428 by Timur's grandson, rounds out the day—once the most advanced astronomical center in the world, now a site where the guide explains what medieval astronomers were measuring and why it mattered.

Bottled water is provided throughout. You set the pace; the guide adjusts the stops and the time spent at each one. Entrance fees to the monuments are paid separately at each site, and lunch is on your own, though the guide can suggest places near the bazaar or the major stops.
