The experience
The tour opens at the Gur Emir, a 15th-century complex built as an Islamic education center and later converted into the mausoleum of Amir Timur and his descendants. The ribbed dome is covered in mosaic work, and the interior holds ornate decorative details that became a prototype for Mughal architecture in India. From there, the guide takes you to Registan Square, a UNESCO World Heritage site surrounded by three madrassahs, each with distinct design and history. The square once served as a hub of trade and gathering. Today it stands as the visual heart of Samarkand's medieval past.
The Shah-i-Zinda Necropolis comes next: a complex of exquisite blue-tiled tombs built between the 14th and 15th centuries. Local tradition holds that one tomb belongs to Kusam ibn Abbas, cousin of Prophet Muhammad, making it a pilgrimage site as well as an architectural landmark. The intricate tilework and the rows of tombs create a distinct spiritual atmosphere. Nearby stands the Bibi-Khanym Mosque, commissioned by Amir Timur in honor of his wife. The mosque was built in five years by hundreds of architects and painters, and despite structural issues that appeared after completion, its majestic blue domes and grand scale remain striking.
The day concludes at Siab Bazaar, a 5-hectare market that has operated since the Silk Road era. Rows of tents display fruits, vegetables, spices and local handicrafts, and bargaining is part of the tradition. The bazaar sits close to the major monuments, so you move directly from formal architecture into the living commerce of the city. An air-conditioned vehicle carries the group between all stops. The guide speaks English throughout.

What is the Gur Emir and why does it matter in Samarkand's history?
The Gur Emir is a 15th-century mausoleum complex built as an Islamic education center and later became the burial place of Amir Timur and his descendants. Its ribbed dome covered in mosaic and ornate interior details became a prototype for Mughal architecture in India, making it one of Central Asia's most influential buildings.
Can I bargain at Siab Bazaar, and what will I find there?
Siab Bazaar is a working market where bargaining is a tradition. You'll find rows of tents selling fresh fruits, vegetables, spices and local handicrafts across its 5 hectares, offering a direct look at how Samarkand's commerce has operated since Silk Road times.
What makes Shah-i-Zinda different from the other sites on this tour?
Shah-i-Zinda is a necropolis of blue-tiled tombs built between the 14th and 15th centuries, with a spiritual dimension: local tradition holds that one tomb belongs to Kusam ibn Abbas, cousin of Prophet Muhammad, making it both an architectural and pilgrimage site rather than a mosque or palace complex.
How long is the tour and what's included in the price?
The tour runs eight hours with a licensed English-speaking guide and air-conditioned transport between all five sites. Entrance tickets to the monuments (approximately $15–20 total per person) are paid separately at each site, not included in the tour price.
