The experience
Registan Square opens the day: three madrasahs face each other across a plaza that was once the commercial heart of the Silk Road, and your guide walks you through the history and symbolism carved into the tilework and arches. From there the tour moves to the Gur-e-Emir Mausoleum, the burial place of Amir Timur, where you'll hear the stories of the Timurid Empire that shaped Central Asia. The Bibi-Khanym Mosque comes next, a monumental structure whose scale and restoration tell their own chapter of that same history.
Shah-i-Zinda Necropolis is a complex of ancient mausoleums known for the blue tiles that cover nearly every surface: a visual marker of religious importance that has drawn pilgrims for centuries. The walk through this site is steep in places, though the guide sets the pace. Siab Bazaar, the liveliest market in the city, closes the day: you'll move through stalls of local bread, dried fruits, spices and everyday goods, watching how Samarkand actually lives when the tour groups thin out.
The tour runs six hours total with an air-conditioned vehicle and a professional guide speaking English or Russian. Public transportation options are available nearby if you prefer to make your own way to the meeting point. All physical fitness levels can manage the itinerary, though some sites involve walking on uneven ground and climbing stairs.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Russian.
What is the Registan and why does the tour start there?
Registan Square is Samarkand's most famous landmark, built as the commercial and cultural center of the Silk Road. It holds three madrasahs (Islamic schools) facing each other, and the guide explains the history, architecture and symbolism of each one.
Can I enter the monuments, or is this just walking around the outside?
You visit all five sites on the itinerary, but entrance fees to the monuments are optional and paid on-site if you choose to enter. The guide will take you through each location and explain what you're seeing whether or not you pay to go inside.
Who was Amir Timur and why is his mausoleum on this tour?
Amir Timur (also known as Tamerlane) founded the Timurid Empire that made Samarkand a major power in Central Asia. The Gur-e-Emir Mausoleum is his burial place and one of the most important monuments in the city, representing the height of that era's architecture and influence.
What is Shah-i-Zinda and what makes it different from the other sites?
Shah-i-Zinda is a necropolis, a complex of ancient mausoleums, famous for the exquisite blue tiles covering its buildings. It has been a pilgrimage site for centuries and sits on a steep hillside, so the walk involves climbing and uneven ground, but the tilework and views make it visually distinct from the other monuments.
Is there time to shop or eat at Siab Bazaar?
Siab Bazaar is the final stop on the tour, and you'll walk through it with your guide to see local bread, dried fruits, spices and everyday life in Samarkand. The tour structure allows time to browse, though meals are not included in the itinerary.
