The tour starts from your hotel in Samarkand and moves through the city's four landmark sites in sequence, each one a different chapter of Timurid architecture and Central Asian history. Registan Square opens the day—three madrasas (Ulugh Beg, Sher-Dor, and Tilya-Kori) face each other across a plaza, their tilework and facades intact enough that you can read the scale of what trade and scholarship meant along the Silk Road. From there the route moves to the Gur-e-Emir Mausoleum, where Timur himself is buried beneath a blue dome that rises above the surrounding streets.

Shah-i-Zinda comes next: a necropolis that climbs a hillside as a series of mausoleums and tombs, each one decorated with different tilework and calligraphy. The avenue itself is the draw—you walk upward past elaborately adorned structures honoring historical figures and family members, and the density of detail (intricate patterns, carved stone, glazed brick) means the guide's knowledge of who is buried where and why matters. The tour wraps at Bibi-Khanym Mosque, a monumental structure named after Timur's wife, its entrance and dome showing the same scale as the palaces and tombs you have already seen. Siab Bazaar sits nearby—the ancient market where the tour ends, and where you can linger if the schedule allows.

The two options differ in what you get from the guide. A professional guide provides historical context and can take photos, but as a secondary skill. A guide who is certified as both a professional photographer and a professional guide will compose shots at the spots where light and angle work best, and will shoot on your phone or his own—meaning you leave with polished images instead of snapshots. Both guides speak English, and the vehicle is air-conditioned throughout. The tour runs four to five hours depending on how long you spend at each site and whether you browse the bazaar at the end.
