  • Walk through Shah-i-Zinda necropolis

The Experience

Registan Square opens the tour — three madrasahs frame a public plaza that was the heart of the Timurid Renaissance, where announcements once echoed across the sand. Your guide walks you through the architecture and the history layered into the tilework and the domes, then moves on to Shah-i-Zinda, a necropolis of mausoleums built between the 14th and 15th centuries. The blue domes stretch in a line that looks from above like an elegant necklace; each tomb is adorned with intricate tilework, and the complex was a pilgrimage site revered as sacred.

Siab Bazaar comes next — a lively market where you sample traditional delicacies and move through the stalls without a fixed itinerary. The energy shifts when you reach Bibi-Khanym Mosque, once one of the largest and most magnificent mosques in the Islamic world. It stands as a grandiose ruin now, restored in parts during the Soviet period, but the scale and the tilework still command the space. The tour closes at Gur-e-Emir Mausoleum, the tomb of Tamerlane, with its distinctive azure dome and the remains of the madrasah and entrance portal that date to the end of the 14th century.

Top questions

What is inside the Gur-e-Emir Mausoleum?

Gur-e-Emir, meaning "Tomb of the King" in Persian, holds the tombs of Tamerlane, his sons Shah Rukh and Miran Shah, his grandsons Ulugh Beg and Muhammad Sultan, and his teacher Sayyid Baraka. The architectural complex is topped with an azure dome, and the earliest parts were built at the end of the 14th century.

Can I visit all four sites in one tour?

Yes — the tour includes Registan Square, Shah-i-Zinda necropolis, Bibi-Khanym Mosque, and Gur-e-Emir Mausoleum. You'll also stop at Siab Bazaar to sample local food and explore the market stalls.

Do I need to buy tickets at each site?

Yes, entrance fees are paid separately at each mausoleum and mosque as you visit — approximately $5 per adult and $3 for children under 12. These are not included in the tour price.

What makes Shah-i-Zinda different from the other tombs?

Shah-i-Zinda is a necropolis, not a single mausoleum — a complex of mausoleums built over nearly 80 years (1370–1449) that stretches in a line with blue domes. It was a pilgrimage site believed to hold the grave of Prophet Muhammad's cousin, Kusam ibn Abbas, and became sacred to the region.

Is the tour suitable for children?

Infants and small children can ride in a pram or stroller, and infants can sit on an adult's lap. The tour involves walking through several sites, so children should be comfortable with moderate activity. It is not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health.
